Hey, parents! Here’s the point…
We all know that writing is important. Students need to be able to communicate clearly (and often quickly) in writing, both in the classroom and on high-stakes tests. In the “real world,” effective written communication is a key element in a wide spectrum of jobs. And of course, writing can allow people of all ages to clarify their thinking, express their feelings, and create entirely new worlds. According to the National Writing Project, the “notion of writing as inquiry, problem solving, and discovery has powerful implications for all learning: writing can deepen learning not just in literature class but also in mathematics, science, history and the arts.” (Because Writing Matters, 25).
But writing isn’t easy. In fact, many people view the ability to write well as an innate skill bestowed upon a few lucky individuals, and completely inaccessible to the majority of the population. But writing can be learned—and taught—as can the critical thinking and revision skills that make good writing possible. We believe that the skills developed through creative writing translate directly to other written work done in the classroom. By writing frequently and for fun, kids have an easier time writing “on demand” in school. Like any other skill, writing becomes easier with practice. By writing regularly about things they enjoy, Pencil Heads workshops make that practice fun. (That’s right—before you know it, your kids will actually look forward to English class!)
Pencil Heads workshops are for all kinds of young writers, from the ones who hesitate over every word, to the ones who have a 300-page novel at home in their desk drawers—and everyone in between. Our method of instruction is designed to encourage kids of all backgrounds and learning levels to grow as writers. We help every Pencil Head to develop their own unique voice, inspired entirely by his or her heart and imagination. Workshop size is limited to ensure that each child receives plenty of guidance and feedback. Because every Pencil Head’s voice is unique, our workshops are not competitive.
By providing young people with time, space, and ideas for writing—as well as a positive, supportive workshop atmosphere— our classes are designed to create successful, confident creative writers. Successful writers who understand why they are writing and for whom. Successful writers who know how to read their own work critically and make effective changes accordingly. Writers who see their work as a process, not as something to be dashed off and completed at once. Writers who soar!
In a mere nine weeks, you will witness something magical. Your kids will become better communicators. They will also become more confident. As Pencil Heads, they will discover that they are writers—and that’s not something that can be erased.
To put it bluntly, Pencil Heads are sharp!
